About the Position
Global Health Strategies is seeking a Director to spearhead and drive strategic communications and media relations campaigns on behalf of GHS’ clients and their initiatives, especially in the growing international vaccine industry.
We are seeking an intelligent and passionate senior communications professional who can combine a sophisticated understanding of an evolving media environment with a strong background in global health and/or the international pharmaceutical industry. The individual should also possess superb diplomatic and client relations skills, a motivational and flexible management style, and should thrive in a fast-paced, demanding and entrepreneurial environment.
The Director will have a management role, with a dual report to a Vice President and a Principal, who oversee GHS communications projects. The Director will lead the day-to-day strategy and execution of critical, high-impact media campaigns and be responsible for direct client management on two high-profile accounts.
Specifically, the Director:
• Should possess top-tier media contacts in the health arena and have a record of pitching and placing stories in broadcast, dailies and social media outlets.
• Will spend significant time liaising with international journalists and opinion-leaders to expand and nurture those contacts
• Guide and direct every aspect of GHS media relations services, from strategic plans and communications materials to the design and execution of training sessions
• Manage the team’ managers and junior staff and attend frequent domestic and international meetings and events both with the client and on its behalf.
• Manage client relationships, ensuring the needs of the client are met and keeping senior management appraised of project development
• Create and track project work plans to ensure timely completion of client deliverables
• Organize and attend meetings, briefings, and other events on behalf of GHS’s clients
Required Qualifications
• 10-12 years of experience in strategic communications or corporate positioning (product communications is not directly relevant unless in public health product) • Intelligent, strategic and creative thinker
• World-class writing and editing skills, especially in persuasive, op-ed style writing
• Superb management skills – balancing discipline with flexibility
• Capacity to motivate and inspire staff and colleagues
• Strong sense of professional and personal ethics
• Positive, energetic attitude; enthusiasm and a sense of humor
• Good political skills and sound judgment
• Entrepreneurial skill and ability to grow existing accounts and develop new ones
• Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Additional Qualifications
• Flexible schedule, able to work weekends or evenings when necessary
• Willingness to travel overseas
• Fluency in at least one foreign language, preferably French
• Overseas work experience, particularly in developing countries
